I started this blog due to my own frustration with the fact that since Blacksburg lacks a local alterna-weekly paper, there doesn't seem to be a central spot to find out what cool things are going on in town. Other folks tell me that the Roanoke Times has events listings for Blacksburg, but I'm provincial and prefer to get my news from The New York Times, so I'm not a subscriber.
This week I managed to miss my favorite band from Charlottesville, The Hackensaw Boys, who were playing this past Thursday at the new music venue in town (called The Lantern). We also had no idea that there was a "holiday parade" in town on Friday evening (though we're Jewish, so I'm not sure we would have brought Oz to see Santa anyway).
For Sunday, December 7, there are a few events:
For toddlers/kids, there's When Elmo Grows Up (at the Salem Civic Center)
For grown-ups and older kids, there's the holiday celebration at Smithfield Plantation (tea, people in period costumes, singing children, etc.)
Upcoming cool things:
The movie "Rachel Getting Married" starts December 12 at The Lyric.
On-going cool things:
If you haven't been to Mountain Lake lately, you should go (assuming the weather gets warmer) to see the creepy, drained lake, which has lost all its water. It looks like a lunar-surface/marshland combo. There are also some great super-short hikes up there; we did Wind Rock (more like a short 5-minute walk) and the views were incredible.
